Karen Zilly began Shenspace in New York City, where she lived and worked as an artist for nearly a decade. Her studio is now located just outside of Chicago, in culturally historic downtown Oak Park, IL, between the Pleasant Home and Hemingway districts. (She is not related to the author Karen Zilly.)
Influenced by the contemplation of memories, travel, nature, and poetry, her minimal compositions are gracefully nuanced; bold colors tempered with emotion, and textural moments that reveal a technique at once vigorous yet delicate. The final images that arise display a conscious sensitivity that captivates with drama and calms with a peaceful sureness.
Her work continues to gain recognition through private buyers, interior designers, and custom site-specific work. Some of her notable projects include custom work for Blesso Properties, Dwell's Harlem House, a contribution to a bedroom makeover by Thom Filicia for InStyle, and the 2010 juried MADE section of the Architectural Digest Home Design Show.
She strives to contribute her time and efforts towards petitions and fundraisers that aid environmental conservation as well as anti-cruelty and humanitarian issues.
